Approval of the Minutes of February Membership Meeting

Lyle Wells motioned to approve, seconded by Robert Williams. Motion carried.

  • Lyle Wells introduced Bentley Braswell. Bentley is leaving for Marine Corps basic training in May and cannot attend the Military Send-off. The Commander presented him with the gift bag and Commander’s Coin.

Finance Officer Report

Finance Officer Gary Dunn shared the March 2026 Finance report:

  • Club Account: Start of Month $41,088.94, End of Month $64,169.39
  • General Account: Start of Month $288,994.76, End of Month $289,719.93
  • Total: $353,889.32
  • Hunters Ball Deposit: $16,306.00
  • Hunters Ball Net Profit: $24,371.44
  • The financial report has been received and will be placed on file.

Audit

Trustee Bruce Hundley reported that the Post trustees met this month and found no discrepancies.

Legion Membership Committee – First Vice Commander Schlaack

  • Membership Numbers: We have 680 members for 2025 and 87 members who are new or have renewed for 2026.
  • We are at 102.42% of the 660-member goal set by the Department.

HVA Report – HVA President Bobby Brite & Past Commander Jim Grimes

  • Gala: Bobby thanked volunteers and will present the financial results at the next meeting. Specific recognition was given to Emily of the Auxiliary.
  • Jim Grimes reported that the entire HVA account is $106,000.

Building Committee – 2nd Vice Commander Mark Epley

Ventilation issues are being addressed, as well as the fire suppression system.

Past Commanders Committee – Past Commander Mark Epley

No report.

Americanism Committee – Chairman Don Lang

  • Sent a contestant, Anne Marie, to the State Oratorical Contest. She was awarded 2nd place.
  • Five boys and four girls are going to Boys and Girls State.

American Legion Riders – Director Bill Goldthwait

  • 100 members.
  • Three members attended an accident management course.

Color Guard Committee – Chairman Mike Phillips

  • Mike Phillips and Scott Stoner attended the Gala and presented the colors.
  • Presenting colors at LCVC.
  • Presenting the colors for Howell Area Junior Baseball Opening Day.
  • Received 15 new rifles along with blanks and cartridges.
  • Working on uniforms and recruiting new members.

Communication Committee – Co-Chair Terri Ramos

  • The website is delayed and hopefully up by Memorial Day.
  • The Commander thanked Bobby for operating the Facebook page.

Gone and Not Forgotten Committee – Co-chair Shaun Gibbons

  • Starting with the first cemetery, Mt. Olivet, and working with the Knights of Columbus. A Saturday in May is being scheduled for flag placement at the Howell Lakeview Cemetery.
  • Knights of Columbus would like a partnership to place the large flags in every cemetery.

Bylaws Committee – Judge Advocate Jim Grimes

Historian Report – Historian and Past Commander Brite

No report.

Post Service Officer’s Report – Terran Frye

Terran Frye helped place a vet’s dog. A veteran was assisted with a $500 gas card. If a ride is needed in Livingston County for a veteran or spouse for shopping, medical, etc., LCVC will provide that.

  • Woody’s wife, Denise Williams.
  • Al Hatfield is having surgery on April 30.
  • Mark Epley is recovering from surgery.

Our sponsored Cub Scout pack would like to get a new pack flag at a cost of approximately $250.

Good of The American Legion

VFW 6464 – Commander Butch Ogden, Steve or Allen Hatfield

  • Breakfast served 285 people last Sunday.
  • May 2, working at the cemetery, replacing flags.

Marine Corps League – Ron Brooks

  • Working on the Ball and possibly raising the price.
  • Melon Fest and other events are being planned.

Livingston County Veterans Council – Dave Mester

  • Dinner tomorrow; Don Lang is Vet of the Year.
  • Sheryl Pitt, Post 419, Pinckney Post Auxiliary, is Auxiliary of the Year.
  • Bill Fraser, Past Commander, was awarded a 50-year certificate by the Commander.
  • Events: Bob Beck Steak Dinner – May 3; Mother’s Day Breakfast – May 10; Military Send Off – May 16; Memorial Day Parade/Ceremony/Luncheon – May 25.
  • Legion officer nominations will continue, and elections will be held at the May meeting.
  • Colonel Chris Zuhlke reported that on April 11, HHS AFJROTC held a memorial event commemorating the Bataan Death March, where 66 cadets completed a 16-mile hike with rucks. The cadets took sponsorships and will donate all proceeds to the Gone and Not Forgotten Committee for flags and markers.
  • Don Lang praised Colonel Zuhlke for providing the guest speaker for the Gala when the scheduled speaker could not attend.
  • Bobby reported that he will be seeking funding for an upgrade to the Vietnam 8×12 case.
  • Bruce Hundley reported that LCVS has expanded transportation services during business hours and asked members to advertise this to other veterans. Spouses are also eligible.
  • Bill Goldthwait reported that the Riders are holding a poker run to support 22 a Day.
  • Scott Stoner reported that a flyover has been offered for the Memorial Day Ceremony, subject to the weather.
  • Alan Hatfield said to contact Alan’s wife for the application for a Quilt of Valor, which was displayed.

Meeting adjourned with the Closing Ceremony at 2100 hrs.
