1. Meeting Called To Order:

The July General Membership Meeting for Devereaux Post 141 was called to order by Cmdr. David Harvey on August 17, 2026, at 1930 hrs., with the presentation of the colors.

  • Chap. Drew Etten provided prayer and MIA/POW Remembrance.
  • Cmdr. Harvey led the Pledge of Allegiance and recital of the American Legion Preamble.

  • Gary Dunn moved to accept the minutes as sent. Paul Allen seconded.
  • Motion passed.

Finance Officer’s Report (Finance Officer Gary Dunn)

As of July 31, 2026:

  • Club Account: $40,887.68
  • Building Account: $403,963.67
  • Combined Total: $444,851.35

The Finance Officer’s report will be received and placed on file, subject to audit.

Finance Audit Committee (Bruce Hundley)

  • Trustees met this afternoon and found no anomalies.

  • Dave Mespers moved to accept all new and transfer members. Shaun Gibbons seconded.
  • The motion carries. Welcome to the new members of Post 141.

Building Committee (2nd Vice Cmdr. Mark Epley)

  • Waiting on estimates for the bathrooms.
  • We are reviewing three quotes for an approximately $65,000 HVAC replacement involving York units. We are also waiting for final bids for the bathroom renovations.

Past Commanders Report (Mark Epley)

  • Will be giving away a 12-gauge shotgun for the golf outing on 08/29.

State Appropriations and Construction (Bobby Brite / Laura Goldthwait)

  • The State has agreed to allow grant funds to cover infrastructure improvements, including the roof, air conditioning, and bathrooms. We are preparing the necessary grant amendment.
  • Working on an amendment to include bathroom remodeling. Waiting for final quotes for design
  • We have until 2028 to use the grant.

HVA (Jim Grimes / Bobby Brite)

  • One more meat bingo
  • Craft Show being planned.
  • The Fowlerville Fair Meat Bingo was successful, netting approximately $5,000. Packed with people from the community.
  • The upcoming Post Golf Outing currently has approximately $15,000 in sponsorships.
  • $26,860.00 total on account.

Post Service Officer Report (Terran Frye; Cmdr. Harvey reported.)

  • One vet for last month. $800.00 for utility bill.

By-laws Committee (Jim Grimes)

  • The Committee will have something to present by next month.

Past Commanders Committee (2nd Vice Cmdr. Mark Epley)

  • The Post Family picnic on July 18th was a success. Putting together the final numbers for the event.

Historian (Bobby Brite)

  • No report.

Legion Riders (Dir. Bill Goldthwait)

  • Riders attended an interment at GLNC.
  • Escorted the wall that heals
  • Raised $5K for 22-a-Day Poker Run
  • Vet of the Month tomorrow
  • Currently 117 members.

Gone But Not Forgotten Committee (Shaun Gibbons)

  • Graves restoration effort at a pause currently.

Honor Guard (Mike Phillips; Shaun Gibbons reported)

  • Honor Guard requested for Sept. 11 at the Howell Public Library for a flag ceremony.
  • Golf outing for suicide awareness & prevention in Byron, MI, with Riders, Honor Guard, and MCL.

Americanism (Don Lang)

  • Don Lang is ready to go back into the school systems to bring awareness of the Boys and Girls States.

Events Committee (Jessica Bogdan)

  • Spent under $100.00 at VetFest

7. Sick Call

  • Christopher Bare and Terran Frye.

8. Unfinished Business

  • Infrastructure and Technology
  • We will receive an update on the Toast POS system upgrade and the AT&T Fiber installation.
  • The AT&T agreement has been signed at $104 per month for television service.

9. New Business

Marine Lance Corporal Michael Hanks Jr. Memorial Bridge Proposal

  • KIA in Falusia and received the Silver Star in 2004.
  • Laura Goldthwait moved that the Post fund the remaining balance of $4,200.00 for signs on the bridge to commemorate LCpl. Hanks.
  • Motion was seconded by Bobby Brite
  • Discussion: The bridge is in Fowlerville. The ceremony will be on 11/17/2026.
  • Motion passed.

HOWELL JR. ROTC SCHOLARSHIP

  • The Post will consider a request to partner on a $1,000-per-year Legion match for the scholarship program. $1K per year for the next five years ($5K total). SAL will match $1K/year. SAL and TAL will work on requirements. Update: SAL increased their donation to $2K.
  • Don Lang moved for the Post to fund $2K annually for the next 5 years.
  • Bobby Brite seconded the motion.
  • Discussion: Don Lang pointed out that numerous people who participated in the Howell Jr. ROTC have also participated in Boys and Girls State.
  • Motion passed.

10. Good Of The American Legion

VFW Post 6464

  • We recognize the success of the VFW Post 6464 July 19 breakfast, which served more than 200 people.

Livingston County Veterans Council (Dave Misner)

  • Tomorrow night we will recognize Jerry Shipley for his service and contributions.

Marine Corps League

  • The Marine Corps League reports business as usual. Paper tickets are available for those who prefer them over online ticketing.

Vietnam Veterans of America (Jon Luker)

  • Anyone with active service from 1975 to present can join.
  • The name will stay the same but will eventually change the name.

Historian Report (Bobby Brite)

  • The Airborne was founded this year.

Veteran’s Suicide

  • Conley will give away a 2008 Taurus Station Wagon to a veteran in need.

Today is the 5th year of Art for Kids (Bobby Brite)

  • This is funded every year and is one of the better community outreaches.
  • Shirts for sale to raise money for 22-a-Day

11. Good Of The Order

  • Scott from Lowe’s reported that Lowe’s in Howell was selected to give $2,500.00 to a veteran in need. Lowe’s is asking for the project to be completed by 11/11/2026.

On Aug 17,2026, the American Legion Post 141 Trustees, in association with the Finance Officer, conducted an audit of the American Legion Post 141 financial records for July 2026.This audit was conducted via a process of random sampling of 10% of the transactions for the month and validation of supporting documentation.
